Butterfly project takes flight at Mid-High School

On the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 31, students sat in Gary Layman’s science class at the Bartlesville Mid-High School quietly collecting data.

Rulers were broken out and close looks were taken.
“Every student has been engaged so far,” notes Layman. “It’s kind of unique to get every kid involved every day."

What has the students at the Mid-High so focused is a project known as Monarch Watch. Made possible by a grant provided by the Bartlesville Public School Foundation, the project is being worked on by an estimated 450 youngsters in the school from 22 different science classes. The encompassed classes are everything from honors biology to special education.

Monarch Watch is a nationwide cooperative network of students, teachers, volunteers and researchers dedicated to the study of Monarch butterflies. As part of the project, students receive Monarch larvae to feed and care for. In the Mid-High School’s case, students pair up to tend to an individual larva.

The Bartlesville Bruins will kick off their 2010 varsity football campaign this evening against host Shawnee. The game is due to begin at 7:30 p.m. Due to construction at the Wolves' Jim Thorpe Stadium, the game will be played on the nearby Tecumseh High School campus, which is located five miles south of Shawnee.
