Outlook 2000 FAQ: Activating the Notify Function

Outlook 2000 has a function that will automatically notify you when new email has arrived. Note, however, that this function will only operate if Outlook is currently running. But with this feature Outlook can be minimized to the task bar or hidden behind another window and you'll still know when new messages arrive.

To activate the feature:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. With the Preferences tab at the top of the pop-up window selected, click on the Email Options button.

  3. Click so that a check mark appears in the box next to the Display a notification message when new mail arrives option.
  4. Click OK, then click OK again.

What the notification looks like:
Now when Outlook is running and a new message arrives, you will be signalled in two ways:

  • Pop-Up Box
    A pop-up box that resembles this should appear:

  • Task Bar Icon
    The following envelope icon will appear in the task bar near the clock:
